Spirometry measures the amount (volume) and speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. Key parameters include Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Abnormal spirometry results can indicate obstructive or restrictive lung diseases.
Lung volumes provide information about the size of the lungs and their ability to expand. Total Lung Capacity (TLC), Functional Residual Capacity (FRC), and Residual Volume (RV) are key measures. Abnormalities in lung volumes can help identify restrictive diseases and conditions causing hyperinflation.
Diffusion capacity tests measure how effectively oxygen passes from the lungs to the bloodstream. The key parameter is the Diffusion Capacity of the Lungs for Carbon Monoxide (DLCO). Reduced DLCO can indicate conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis or pulmonary hypertension.
Understanding and interpreting PFTs is crucial in respiratory medicine. It aids in diagnosing various lung diseases, assessing disease severity, and monitoring response to treatment. With the knowledge of key parameters from spirometry, lung volumes, and diffusion capacity, medical professionals can effectively utilize PFTs to enhance patient care.
