Other symptoms may include: Cloudy or bloody urine, Strong-smelling urine, Frequent urge to urinate, Pain in the lower abdomen or back. Pregnant women with a UTI are at risk for preterm labor and low birth weight babies.
There are many different causes of UTI's, but the most common cause is bacteria. Bacteria can enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply. This can happen when there is an opening in the skin, such as during sexual intercourse, or when there is a change in the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina. Other possible causes of UTI's include: Use of certain products, such as spermicides or diaphragms, Pregnancy, Menopause, Use of certain medications, such as antibiotics or birth control pills, Urinary tract infections are also more common in women who have diabetes or who are obese.

Wipe from front to back. Wiping from front to back after using the restroom helps to prevent bacteria from spreading from the anus to the urethra. Avoid douching. Douching can disrupt the natural balance of good and bad bacteria in the vagina and increase the risk of infection.
