This review synthesizes current clinical guidelines and recent evidence for optimizing brain health across the adult lifespan, integrating epidemiological data, pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factor modification, diagnostic strategies, and both established and emerging interventions. Emphasis is placed on practical, guideline-based recommendations for clinicians aiming to preserve cognitive function, reduce disease burden, and enhance quality of life in diverse adult populations.
Brain health encompasses the preservation of optimal neurological function, encompassing cognition, emotional regulation, and physical coordination, throughout the lifespan. The rising prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases, cognitive impairment, and mental health disorders highlights an urgent need for evidence-based strategies to optimize brain health in adults. This article provides a comprehensive review of guideline-driven approaches, integrating mechanistic insights and clinical relevance, to inform best practices in primary and preventive care.
Globally, neurocognitive disorders represent a major public health challenge, with an estimated 55 million individuals affected by dementia as of 2021, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The incidence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias increases exponentially with advancing age, doubling every five years after age 65. Cognitive decline, stroke, and neuropsychiatric disorders contribute significantly to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditures. Notably, subclinical cognitive impairment affects a substantial proportion of middle-aged adults, underscoring the importance of early intervention. Brain health is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, vascular, metabolic, and inflammatory mechanisms.
