Early stroke signs are often missed due to their subtle and variable presentation. The acronym FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, Time to call emergency services) is a useful tool for initial identification. However, other less obvious symptoms such as sudden confusion, dizziness, or severe headache should also raise suspicion.
Once a stroke is suspected, immediate diagnostic imaging is crucial. Computed tomography (CT) scans are typically the first line of investigation, though magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may provide more detailed information. Blood tests, including coagulation profiles, are also essential to rule out mimics and guide treatment.
After a stroke diagnosis, rapid initiation of treatment is paramount. For ischemic strokes, thrombolytic therapy should be considered if within the appropriate time window. In hemorrhagic strokes, controlling blood pressure and potentially surgical intervention are key. All stroke patients require supportive care, including airway management, hydration, and fever control.
Following the acute phase, secondary prevention becomes a major focus. This involves risk factor modification, including blood pressure control, cholesterol management, smoking cessation, and antithrombotic therapy. Regular follow-up and rehabilitation are also integral to improve functional outcomes and prevent recurrent strokes.
Early recognition and management of stroke are critical in improving patient outcomes. It requires a thorough understanding of the signs, a high index of suspicion, and a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment. By staying abreast of current best practices, healthcare professionals can play a significant role in reducing the burden of this devastating condition.
