Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health challenge, necessitating advancements in detection methods to optimize patient outcomes. The development of novel diagnostic strategies has significantly improved the speed, accuracy, and accessibility of TB detection.

GeneXpert MTB/RIF

The GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay, a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), has revolutionized TB detection. It simultaneously detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and rifampicin resistance, providing results within two hours. Its high sensitivity and specificity have made it a valuable tool in TB endemic regions.

Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)

WGS has emerged as a potent tool for TB detection and epidemiological studies. It offers comprehensive insights into the genetic makeup of MTBC, aiding in the detection of drug resistance and strain typing. Despite its higher cost, WGS's ability to provide a complete snapshot of the MTBC genome justifies its increasing use.

The development of POC tests, such as the TB-LAMP and Truenat MTB, has been a significant stride towards achieving universal access to TB diagnostics.
