Calcium is the primary constituent of hydroxyapatite, the mineral component of bone, providing bone its strength and rigidity. This balance is critical for maintaining bone health and integrity.
Calcium homeostasis is tightly regulated by hormonal control, primarily involving parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin. PTH and vitamin D increase blood calcium levels by promoting bone resorption, intestinal calcium absorption, and renal calcium reabsorption. Calcitonin, on the other hand, lowers blood calcium levels by inhibiting osteoclast activity.
Dysregulation of calcium metabolism can lead to various bone disorders. Hypercalcemia, often caused by hyperparathyroidism or malignancies, can result in bone loss and fractures. Hypocalcemia, commonly seen in vitamin D deficiency or renal disease, can lead to osteoporosis and rickets. Calcium supplementation is often recommended for bone health, especially in populations at risk for osteoporosis. However, the benefits must be weighed against potential risks, such as kidney stones. Adequate dietary calcium intake, combined with vitamin D and regular exercise, is generally preferred for promoting bone health.
