Epilepsy, a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, affects over 50 million people worldwide. Continuous research has led to advancements in its management, enhancing patient care and outcomes.
High-density EEG and advanced MRI techniques have improved the identification of epileptogenic foci. Functional neuroimaging, such as PET and SPECT, have also become increasingly important in pre-surgical evaluations.
New anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) with novel mechanisms of action, such as Brivaracetam and Perampanel, have shown promising results in controlling seizures and reducing side-effects. Additionally, CBD-based treatments like Epidiolex have emerged as effective options for refractory epilepsy.
Minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) and stereotactic radiosurgery, have provided alternatives to traditional resective surgery. These techniques offer reduced morbidity and improved recovery times.
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), and responsive neurostimulation (RNS) have emerged as effective treatments for drug-resistant epilepsy. These therapies provide continuous seizure monitoring and tailored responses to abnormal neural activity.
Dietary approaches such as the ketogenic diet, modified Atkins diet, and low glycemic index treatment have shown efficacy in managing refractory epilepsy, particularly in children.
Recent advances in epilepsy management have broadened the therapeutic armamentarium, offering new hope for patients. Continued research and innovation are essential to further improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
