Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) present a significant public health challenge in India, with incidences on the rise in recent years. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the current state of VBDs in India and suggest effective strategies for their control.
India carries a high burden of VBDs, including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and zika virus. Rapid urbanisation, climate change, and inadequate public health infrastructure contribute to the increasing prevalence of these diseases. The World Health Organization reports that India accounted for 4% of global malaria cases in 2019, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this issue.
Controlling VBDs in India is complicated by several factors. These include a lack of comprehensive surveillance systems, insufficient public health funding, and socio-economic disparities that limit access to healthcare. Additionally, the widespread use of insecticides has led to resistance in vector populations, further complicating control efforts.
Effective strategies for controlling VBDs include strengthening surveillance systems, promoting community participation in vector control, and improving access to diagnostic and treatment services. Additionally, research into novel vector control methods and vaccines is crucial. The recent introduction of the world's first malaria vaccine offers hope for the future control of VBDs.
The rising tide of VBDs in India is a pressing public health issue that requires urgent attention. By understanding the complexities of this problem and implementing comprehensive control strategies, healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in combatting this public health crisis.
