The landscape of hepatitis management has transformed significantly in recent years, with advancements in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies. This article provides an update on these developments to equip healthcare professionals with the latest knowledge in this field.
Technological advancements have enhanced the accuracy and efficiency of hepatitis diagnosis. The introduction of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) provides a more comprehensive view of viral diversity and drug resistance. Additionally, the development of non-invasive tests, such as transient elastography and serological markers, has improved the detection of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, crucial for staging hepatitis.
The treatment landscape has been revolutionized by the advent of Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs). These drugs, targeting specific steps in the hepatitis C virus life cycle, have shown cure rates exceeding 90%. In hepatitis B, the development of new classes of antivirals and immunotherapies are promising for achieving functional cure.
Preventive measures have also progressed, with the introduction of more effective vaccines. For hepatitis B, the advent of the adjuvanted vaccine has shown higher seroprotection rates, especially in immunocompromised individuals. In hepatitis C, although no vaccine is currently available, progress in understanding the immune response to the virus is paving the way for vaccine development.
Novel care models integrating primary care and specialist services have shown effectiveness in managing hepatitis. These models, such as the 'one-stop-shop' approach, enhance access to care, improve adherence to treatment, and facilitate the management of comorbidities.
The advancements in hepatitis management have brought us closer to the goal of hepatitis elimination. However, continued research and innovation, along with effective implementation of these advancements, are crucial. By staying abreast with these developments, healthcare professionals can play a pivotal role in this endeavour.
