However, the interpretation of these tests can be complex, requiring a comprehensive understanding of respiratory physiology. Understanding PFT Components

Standard PFTs comprise of spirometry, lung volumes, and diffusion capacity. Spirometry measures the volume and speed of air that can be inhaled and exhaled, providing vital information on airflow limitation. Lung volumes assess the total capacity of the lungs, while diffusion capacity evaluates the efficiency of gas transfer from the lungs to the blood.

Interpreting Spirometry

Spirometry results are interpreted by comparing the patient's values to predicted normal values. A reduced ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) to forced vital capacity (FVC) suggests obstructive disease, such as asthma or COPD. A reduced FEV1 and FVC with a normal FEV1/FVC ratio points towards restrictive disease, like pulmonary fibrosis.

Assessing Lung Volumes and Diffusion Capacity

Lung volumes can provide additional information when spirometry is inconclusive. An increased residual volume (RV) can indicate air trapping, common in obstructive diseases. A reduced total lung capacity (TLC) is suggestive of restrictive disease. The diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is useful in diagnosing and monitoring conditions that affect gas exchange, such as emphysema or pulmonary hypertension.
