Antimicrobial resistance is a global health concern that threatens the effective prevention and treatment of an ever-increasing range of infections. Successful ASPs require a multidisciplinary team approach. A clear and comprehensive policy is vital for an effective ASP. This policy should outline the goals of the program, the roles and responsibilities of the team, and the strategies to be employed. It should also include guidelines for antimicrobial use, incorporating local resistance patterns and national guidelines.
Interventions should be tailored to the specific needs of the hospital and may include strategies such as pre-authorization of certain antimicrobials, prospective audit with intervention and feedback, and education. Regular review of these interventions is crucial to ensure they are achieving their intended outcomes.
Monitoring the use of antimicrobials and the outcomes of interventions is a critical component of an ASP. This should include both process measures and outcome measures. Regular feedback should be provided to prescribers to promote adherence to the policy and to improve prescribing practices.
Implementing an effective antimicrobial stewardship program is a complex process that requires commitment, collaboration, and continuous review. However, with the right team, policy, interventions, and monitoring systems in place, hospitals can play a significant role in combating antimicrobial resistance and ensuring the continued efficacy of these vital drugs.
