Syncope is classified into three broad categories: reflex (neurally-mediated), orthostatic hypotension, and cardiac syncope. Reflex syncope is the most common, often triggered by emotional distress or pain. Orthostatic hypotension results from a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing. Cardiac syncope, though less common, is more serious, often indicating underlying heart disease.

Management is tailored to the underlying cause. Reflex syncope often requires reassurance and lifestyle modifications. Orthostatic hypotension may be managed with volume expansion, compression stockings, or pharmacological therapy. Cardiac syncope mandates prompt evaluation and treatment of the underlying cardiac condition.
The prognosis of syncope varies greatly depending on the underlying cause. While reflex syncope and orthostatic hypotension are generally benign, cardiac syncope may signify serious underlying conditions, warranting immediate attention and aggressive management.
Understanding the complexities of syncope requires a thorough and systematic approach. Accurate classification, comprehensive evaluation, and targeted management are key to improving patient outcomes. By demystifying this enigmatic condition, healthcare professionals can ensure effective patient care and potentially life-saving interventions.
