Stroke, a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, requires prompt recognition and management to minimize neurological damage. This article provides a concise guide to early stroke recognition and management.
Healthcare professionals must be adept at identifying early stroke symptoms. These include sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body, confusion, trouble speaking or understanding, difficulty seeing in one or both eyes, and severe headache with no known cause. A mnemonic helpful in stroke recognition is FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911).
Initial management of stroke involves stabilizing the patient's vital signs, performing a rapid neurological evaluation, and initiating thrombolytic therapy if indicated and safe. Timely neuroimaging, preferably with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is crucial to differentiate ischemic from hemorrhagic stroke. Subsequent management depends on the stroke subtype and underlying cause.
In conclusion, early recognition and prompt management of stroke can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. Continuous education and training in stroke recognition and management are essential for all healthcare professionals.
