Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This article provides an overview of recent advancements and best practices in managing this critical condition.
Over the years, significant advancements have been made in the management of ACS. These include the development of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays for early diagnosis, and novel antithrombotic therapies such as ticagrelor and prasugrel. The role of non-invasive imaging modalities like coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has also been expanded.
Best practices in ACS management encompass early diagnosis, risk stratification, and individualized treatment. Early invasive strategy is recommended for high-risk patients, while a conservative approach may be suitable for low-risk patients. Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) remains the cornerstone of ACS treatment, with newer agents offering potential benefits.
GDMT plays a crucial role in ACS management. It includes beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, statins, and antiplatelet agents. Adherence to GDMT is associated with improved outcomes and should be encouraged.
Patients should be educated about the importance of medication adherence, regular follow-up, and lifestyle modifications. These include smoking cessation, regular exercise, a heart-healthy diet, and stress management.
The management of ACS has evolved significantly with advancements in diagnostic tools, pharmacotherapy, and the understanding of disease pathophysiology. Best practices involve a combination of early diagnosis, risk stratification, individualized treatment, GDMT, and patient education. Continued research and innovation are needed to further improve patient outcomes in ACS.
