A thorough medical history, including dietary habits, family history, and medication use, can provide valuable clues to the underlying cause.
Complete blood count (CBC) is the initial lab test for suspected anemia. It provides information about hemoglobin levels, red blood cell (RBC) count, and indices such as mean corpuscular volume (MCV). MCV aids in classifying anemia as microcytic, normocytic, or macrocytic, guiding further investigations. The reticulocyte count, indicative of bone marrow response, is also crucial.
Iron studies, including serum iron, ferritin, and transferrin saturation, help identify iron deficiency anemia. In contrast, elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), indirect bilirubin, and decreased haptoglobin levels suggest hemolytic anemia.
