AMS programs aim to optimize antimicrobial use, improving patient outcomes while minimizing unintended consequences such as toxicity, resistance, and unnecessary costs.
AMS is a key strategy in combating antimicrobial resistance. By ensuring judicious use of antibiotics, AMS programs can help in preserving the effectiveness of existing antibiotics, delaying the emergence of resistance, and reducing healthcare-associated infections. Moreover, these programs can enhance patient safety by reducing the risk of adverse drug events and Clostridium difficile infection.
