FNA is the gold standard for evaluating thyroid nodules. It is safe, cost-effective, and provides material for cytological examination. The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology aids in standardizing reporting and guiding management.
Management depends on the size, sonographic features, cytology results, and patient's preference. Options include surveillance, surgery, or minimally invasive procedures like radiofrequency or ethanol ablation.
Follow-up is crucial in all patients. Those with benign nodules require periodic ultrasound and clinical assessment. Patients who underwent surgery need surveillance for recurrence and appropriate thyroid hormone replacement.
