Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease that affects the sweat glands in the body. It is characterized by painful, red bumps filled with pus that can form in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, and buttocks. Although HS is a rare condition, it can be debilitating and cause significant physical and psychological distress. Fortunately, advances in medical procedures are helping to improve the lives of those with HS. In this article, we will explore the latest advances in HS medical procedures.
The diagnosis of HS usually begins with a physical exam. During this exam, a doctor will look for signs of HS, such as red bumps, pus-filled lesions, and scarring. In some cases, a doctor may also order blood tests or imaging tests to help diagnose the condition. Once HS is diagnosed, treatment is usually focused on reducing inflammation and controlling symptoms. This may include topical or oral medications, such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, or hormonal medications. In some cases, doctors may also recommend surgery to remove affected skin or to drain pus-filled lesions.
In the past, surgery for HS was often limited to draining pus-filled lesions and removing affected skin. However, recent advances in surgical techniques have made it possible to treat HS more effectively. One of the most promising advances is the use of laser treatments. Laser treatments can be used to target and destroy affected skin, reducing the size of the lesion and improving the appearance of the skin. This can help reduce pain and discomfort associated with HS. In addition, doctors are now using a technique called “suction lipectomy” to remove affected skin. This is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done in the doctor’s office and does not require general anesthesia. Finally, doctors are now using a procedure called “excisional debridement” to remove large, pus-filled lesions. This procedure involves the use of a scalpel to remove the affected skin and can help reduce pain and improve the appearance of the skin.
In addition to advances in surgical techniques, new medications are also helping to improve the lives of those with HS. For example, biologic drugs, such as adalimumab and infliximab, are now being used to reduce inflammation and control symptoms. In addition, new topical medications, such as clindamycin and tazarotene, are now being used to reduce inflammation and improve the appearance of the skin. These medications can be used in combination with other treatments, such as laser treatments and suction lipectomy, to improve the effectiveness of treatment.
