Introduction

As healthcare professionals, a deep understanding of neurodegenerative disorders is vital, and Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most prevalent. PD affects nearly 1% of individuals over 60 years old, making it a significant concern in geriatric care.

Etiology and Pathophysiology

PD is a multifactorial disease with both genetic and environmental influences. The specific cause remains unknown, but it is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. This loss leads to a decrease in dopamine levels, causing motor and non-motor symptoms.

Clinical Manifestations

PD is often recognized by its cardinal motor symptoms: bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability. Non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment, depression, and autonomic dysfunction can also be present and significantly impact patients' quality of life.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of PD is primarily clinical, based on history and physical examination. Currently, there are no definitive diagnostic tests, but imaging studies like DaTSCAN can provide supportive evidence. Early diagnosis is crucial for timely management.

Management

Treatment of PD is symptomatic, aiming to improve quality of life. Pharmacological therapy with levodopa remains the gold standard. Non-pharmacological interventions, including physical therapy and deep brain stimulation, can also be beneficial.

Prognosis

PD is a progressive disorder with a variable course. Factors influencing prognosis include age at onset, rate of disease progression, and presence of non-motor symptoms. Regular follow-up is essential to adjust treatment plans and manage complications.

Conclusion

Understanding Parkinson's disease is essential for healthcare professionals. While it remains a complex and challenging disease to manage, advances in research continue to provide new insights into its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Continued education on PD will ensure we deliver the best possible care to our patients.
