Lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes, increased physical activity, and behavioral therapy, form the cornerstone of obesity management. Medical therapy may be considered for patients with a BMI of 30 or more or those with a BMI of 27 or more who have obesity-related comorbidities.
Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for patients with severe obesity (BMI >40) or those with a BMI of 35 or more with serious comorbidities. It can result in significant weight loss and improvement or resolution of obesity-related conditions.
A multidisciplinary approach involving dietitians, psychologists, exercise physiologists, and medical practitioners is crucial for comprehensive obesity management. This approach ensures all aspects of the patient's health are addressed, improving long-term outcomes.
Prevention is a key component in managing the obesity epidemic. Public health interventions that promote healthy eating, regular physical activity, and healthy environments can help prevent obesity at a population level.
Managing obesity requires a comprehensive, multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes, employs both non-surgical and surgical interventions, and emphasizes prevention. As healthcare professionals, we must lead the charge in implementing these strategies, working collaboratively to improve patient outcomes and tackle this global health crisis.
