It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is calculated using the patient’s systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings. Systolic blood pressure is the highest pressure in the arteries during a heartbeat, while diastolic blood pressure is the lowest pressure in the arteries between heartbeats. MAP is calculated by combining the systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings. The formula for calculating MAP is: MAP = (Systolic BP + 2 x Diastolic BP) / 3 For example, if a patient’s systolic blood pressure is 120 mmHg and their diastolic blood pressure is 80 mmHg, their MAP would be calculated as follows: MAP = (120 + 2 x 80) / 3 MAP = 100 mmHg
