Therefore, healthcare professionals must carefully consider the benefits and risks when prescribing multiple medications.
Drug interactions can lead to potentially harmful effects, including diminished therapeutic efficacy or increased toxicity. They can occur at the pharmacodynamic level, where two drugs affect the same physiological system, or at the pharmacokinetic level, where one drug alters the absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion of another.
Healthcare professionals can minimize the risk of adverse drug interactions by maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of potential drug interactions, utilizing drug interaction checker tools, and conducting comprehensive medication reviews. Patient education is also essential to ensure medication adherence and to alert patients to potential signs of adverse interactions.
As healthcare professionals, we are at the forefront of managing polypharmacy and preventing harmful drug interactions. Through comprehensive medication review, patient education, and continual learning, we can optimize medication therapy and improve patient outcomes.
