Understanding Spirometry

Spirometry measures the volume and speed of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. Key parameters include Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), and their ratio (FEV1/FVC). An FEV1/FVC ratio less than 0.7 suggests obstructive lung disease, while a lower than predicted FVC suggests restrictive disease.

Diffusing Capacity of the Lung for Carbon Monoxide (DLCO)
