The major electrolytes include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate, and bicarbonate. Their concentrations are tightly regulated by renal and hormonal mechanisms. By adopting a systematic approach, clinicians can unravel the diagnostic conundrum of electrolyte imbalances, thereby facilitating prompt and appropriate management.
