First-line pharmacotherapies, including nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion, and varenicline, have proven effective in aiding smoking cessation. NRT, available in various forms such as patches, gum, and lozenges, helps to alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Bupropion, an antidepressant, and varenicline, a partial agonist of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, are both non-nicotine medications that have shown efficacy in reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
Behavioural interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and self-help resources, can complement pharmacological interventions.
