The article discusses the relevance of interoceptive awareness in neurological, psychiatric, and chronic pain conditions and evaluates current guidelines and recent advances. Practical considerations for implementation and areas for future research are highlighted, providing a comprehensive resource for clinicians considering this modality in rehabilitation practice.
\nThe concept of interoception, defined as the sense of the physiological condition of the body, has gained substantial attention in both neuroscience and clinical medicine. Interoceptive retraining aims to recalibrate the brain-body axis by targeting the perception, interpretation, and regulation of internal bodily signals such as heart rate, respiration, and visceral sensations. This technique has demonstrated promise in improving outcomes for conditions ranging from chronic pain and anxiety disorders to functional neurological disorders and eating disorders.
