Firstly, it is crucial to comprehend the basic parameters of laboratory tests, including the reference range and the units of measurement. An understanding of the biological variance and the pre-analytical and analytical errors that can affect results is also fundamental.
Interpreting lab reports requires an integration of the clinical context. The patient's history, symptoms, and physical examination findings should be considered when interpreting the results. A single abnormal result may not be significant if the patient is asymptomatic, while a series of abnormal results may indicate a serious condition.
Some common abnormal results include elevated liver enzymes, changes in complete blood count, and electrolyte imbalances. Each of these should be interpreted in light of the patient's clinical picture. For instance, elevated liver enzymes could indicate liver disease, but they could also be due to alcohol consumption or medication use.
While primary care providers are skilled at interpreting most lab results, there are times when consultation with a specialist is warranted. This may be the case when results are significantly outside the reference range, when the clinical picture is unclear, or when the patient's condition is not improving despite treatment.
