Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is one of the most common STIs in the United States and can cause serious health problems if left untreated. While the signs and symptoms of gonorrhea can be obvious, many people don’t know that there are a few “silent” symptoms that can go unnoticed. It is important for doctors to be aware of these silent symptoms so they can properly diagnose and treat the infection.
Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact with an infected person. This can include vaginal, anal, or oral sex. The bacteria can also be spread from mother to baby during childbirth. It is important to practice safe sex and get tested regularly if you are sexually active.
The most common symptoms of gonorrhea include burning during urination, increased discharge from the penis or vagina, and pain or swelling in the testicles or vulva. However, many people with gonorrhea don’t experience any symptoms at all. This is why it is important to get tested regularly if you are sexually active.
The silent symptoms of gonorrhea are those that may go unnoticed or are difficult to detect. These can include:
Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis
Pain during sex
Anal itching or discharge
Sore throat
Fever
Joint pain
Skin rash
Eye irritation or discharge
These symptoms can be caused by other conditions, so it is important to get tested if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.
If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause serious health complications. In women, the infection can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes, leading to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can cause infertility, chronic pain, and ectopic pregnancies. In men, the infection can spread to the testicles and prostate, leading to infertility and other complications.
Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics. Most cases can be cured with a single dose of antibiotics, but it is important to take all of the medication as prescribed. It is also important to abstain from sexual activity until the infection has been completely cleared.

If you think you may have been exposed to gonorrhea, it is important to get tested and seek treatment right away.
