Anemia can be classified based on the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) into microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic anemia. This classification helps narrow down the potential causes and guide further investigations.
Further investigations depend on the initial classification. Microcytic anemia may suggest iron deficiency or thalassemia, warranting iron studies or hemoglobin electrophoresis.
