Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death globally. Early detection and prompt management significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in this process, necessitating a thorough understanding of the signs and management of stroke.
Stroke presents with sudden neurological deficits. The acronym 'FAST' (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call emergency services) is a universally accepted guide to recognizing stroke. However, other signs like sudden confusion, trouble seeing, walking difficulties, and severe headache with no known cause also warrant suspicion.
Stroke management is a time-sensitive process. Pre-hospital care includes maintaining airway, breathing, and circulation and rapid transport to a stroke-ready hospital. In-hospital care involves immediate neuroimaging, usually a non-contrast CT scan, to differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This distinction is crucial as management differs significantly.
Ischemic strokes, caused by a clot obstructing blood flow to the brain, are managed with thrombolytic therapy if presented within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. Endovascular procedures like mechanical thrombectomy may be considered within 24 hours in certain cases.
Hemorrhagic strokes, resulting from a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, are managed by controlling blood pressure, reversing anticoagulation, and surgical intervention in severe cases. Neurosurgical consultation is essential.
Early detection and appropriate management of stroke can significantly improve patient outcomes. As healthcare professionals, staying updated on the latest guidelines and maintaining a high index of suspicion for stroke symptoms is crucial. The role of continuous patient education to recognize stroke symptoms cannot be overemphasized.
