The liver's ability to control infections, remove toxins, process nutrients, and regulate blood clotting is compromised in cirrhosis. This results in a variety of complications, including portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatorenal syndrome.
Portal hypertension, a common complication of cirrhosis, results from increased resistance to blood flow through the liver. This can lead to the development of varices, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy. Management strategies include the use of non-selective beta-blockers and endoscopic band ligation for variceal bleeding.
Hepatic encephalopathy is a decline in brain function that occurs as a result of severe liver disease. Management includes the use of lactulose, rifaximin, and ensuring adequate nutrition while avoiding triggers such as constipation and infection.
