Population aging is a defining demographic trend, with advancing age correlating with increased heterogeneity in health status and functional capacity. Traditional chronological age fails to capture this variability, prompting the need for functional metrics such as the Functional Aging Index (FAI) to more accurately stratify risk and inform clinical decision-making. FAI encompasses objective and subjective measures of mobility, strength, cognition, independence, and psychosocial wellbeing, offering a multidimensional approach to evaluating biological aging. The adoption of FAI screening in clinical practice can facilitate early detection of functional decline, promote tailored interventions, and ultimately enhance healthy longevity trajectories among older adults.
The global increase in life expectancy has shifted attention from mere lifespan extension to the quality of those additional years, with functional impairment representing a major determinant of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare utilization in older populations. Epidemiological studies reveal that up to 25% of community-dwelling adults aged 65 and above experience significant functional limitations, with higher prevalence in institutionalized settings.
