In some cases, a surfactant replacement therapy may be used. This is a treatment where a synthetic surfactant is given to the baby to help the lungs stay inflated. This treatment is often used in combination with other treatments. What are the Complications of Hyaline Membrane Disease? The most common complication of HMD is respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). This is a condition where the baby’s lungs do not work properly and the baby has difficulty breathing. Other complications of HMD include apnea, pneumothorax, and air leaks in the lungs.
