The electrical conduction system of the heart is a complex network of specialised cells that generate and conduct electrical impulses. These electrical impulses coordinate the contraction of the heart muscle, ensuring that blood is pumped efficiently around the body.

The electrical conduction system consists of the sinoatrial node (SA node), atrioventricular node (AV node), Bundle of His, Purkinje fibres and the ventricular muscle. The SA node is located in the right atrium and it generates electrical impulses that spread through the atria and cause them to contract. The AV node is located in the base of the right ventricle and it delays the electrical impulse so that the ventricles can fill with blood before they contract. The Bundle of His divides into left and right bundle branches which spread the electrical impulse down through the ventricular muscle causing it to contract. The Purkinje fibres are located in the walls of both ventricles and they help to ensure that both ventricles contracts simultaneously.

The electrical conduction system ensures that blood is pumped efficiently around the body by coordinating the contraction of the heart muscle. The Electrical Conduction System

Purkinje fibers are fine, branching fibers that are located in all areas of both ventricles. Purkinje fibers conduct electrical impulses from either bundle branch to individual muscle cells in order to coordinate contraction of all areas of both ventricles.

The Atrioventricular conduction system of the heart

The atrioventricular (AV) conduction system of the heart is responsible for conducting electrical impulses from the atria to the ventricles. The AV conduction system consists of the AV node, the His-Purkinje system, and the Bundle of Kent.

The AV node is a small cluster of cells located at the junction of the atria and ventricles. The AV node delayens impulses as they travel from the atria to the ventricles, allowing the atria to contract fully before the ventricles begin to contract.

The His-Purkinje system is a network of specialized cardiac muscle fibers that conduct electrical impulses from the AV node to the ventricles. The His-Purkinje system consists of two bundles: The right bundle branch and left bundle branch. The right bundle branch conducts electrical impulses to the right ventricle, while the left bundle branch conducts electrical impulses to the left ventricle.

The Bundle of Kent is a group of fibers that connects the His-Bundle to Purkinje fibers in order to allow electrical impulses to be conducted from one side of the heart to another.
