Practical implications for doctors and healthcare professionals are highlighted, with a focus on improving patient outcomes through evidence-based, integrative rehabilitation protocols.
Rehabilitation aims not only to restore baseline function but also to enhance physiological and psychological resilience, thereby reducing recurrence and improving quality of life. Ayurveda, a system of medicine with ancient roots and evolving modern applications, emphasizes individualized strategies for functional optimization. Recent interest in Ayurvedic rehabilitation is driven by its potential to address complex, multifactorial conditions through personalized, mechanism-based interventions that integrate mind, body, and environment. The convergence of Ayurvedic and biomedical approaches offers promising avenues for enhancing functional resilience in diverse patient populations.
The global burden of disability from chronic diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, neurological disorders, and aging is on the rise, with substantial implications for healthcare systems. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability, and rehabilitation needs are intensifying due to population aging and increased survival from acute conditions. In India and Southeast Asia, traditional medicine, including Ayurveda, is frequently integrated into rehabilitation, yet systematic data on outcomes and utilization remain limited. Recent epidemiological studies suggest that integrative rehabilitation strategies may improve functional outcomes and reduce healthcare costs, particularly in resource-constrained settings.
Functional impairment and resilience are influenced by complex interactions between cellular, tissue, and systemic processes. In Ayurveda, pathophysiology is understood in terms of doshic imbalances (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), dhatu (tissue) degeneration, and agni (digestive/metabolic fire) dysfunction.
