Chronic illnesses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, neurodegenerative disorders, and multimorbidity syndromes frequently result in persistent, multifaceted functional limitations. Traditional rehabilitation often emphasizes singular domains, such as motor function or cardiorespiratory capacity. However, complex chronic illness typically involves overlapping deficits in mobility, cognition, mental health, and social participation. Multidomain functional prioritization (MFP) proposes a structured, patient-centered approach to rehabilitation, whereby clinicians systematically identify, rank, and address functional deficits in order of patient-reported priorities and clinical urgency.
