Prilosec works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prilosec is available in both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription form. The OTC form is intended for short-term use, while the prescription form is intended for long-term use. It is important to follow the dosage instructions for Prilosec carefully to ensure optimal relief from symptoms. If patient's are taking Prilosec OTC, the recommended dose is 20 mg once daily for 14 days. The usual adult dose of Prilosec for treating GERD is 20 mg once daily for four to eight weeks. For preventing ulcers in people taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the recommended dose of Prilosec is 20 mg once daily for up to six months. For treating duodenal ulcers, the recommended adult dose of Prilosec is 40 mg once daily for four weeks. For all other indications, the recommended adult dose of Prilosec is 20 mg twice daily. The maximum recommended daily dose of Prilosec is 80 mg. Children ages 1-11 years should be given a lower dose of Prilosec depending on their weight, while children under 1 year old should not be given this medication.
