However, their safe integration into evidence-based medicine necessitates rigorous evaluation of drug safety profiles, which are profoundly influenced by formulation standardization and quality variability. This review critically examines the current landscape of drug safety evaluation in Ayurveda, emphasizing the impact of formulation standardization, quality control practices, and batch-to-batch variability on clinical outcomes. Introduction

Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, utilizes complex herbal and mineral formulations for the treatment and prevention of various diseases. The growing global acceptance of Ayurveda has prompted renewed interest in the scientific validation and safety assessment of its products. Unlike conventional pharmaceuticals, Ayurvedic formulations often comprise multiple bioactive constituents, rendering standardization and quality assurance challenging. In Western countries, the popularity of herbal supplements, including Ayurvedic preparations, continues to rise. Treatment & Management

Management of adverse events due to Ayurvedic formulations is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Immediate cessation of the suspected product is crucial. In cases of severe toxicity, such as acute liver or kidney injury, hospitalization, intensive monitoring, and organ-supportive therapy may be necessary. The implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the development of pharmacopoeial standards for key Ayurvedic formulations have significantly improved product quality. Additionally, emerging research on nanotechnology-based delivery systems and phytochemical fingerprinting offers promise for enhancing the safety and efficacy of traditional medicines. Clinical trials adopting rigorous randomized controlled designs are beginning to provide high-quality safety and efficacy data, thereby informing integration into mainstream practice.

Guideline Recommendations

Recent guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO), national regulatory agencies, and professional bodies underscore the imperative of standardization, quality assurance, and pharmacovigilance in the use of Ayurvedic medicines. Key recommendations include: mandatory GMP certification for manufacturers, establishment of pharmacopoeial monographs for commonly used formulations, routine batch testing for contaminants, and comprehensive labeling with ingredient disclosure. Clinicians are advised to inquire routinely about traditional medicine use, educate patients on the risks of non-standardized products, and report adverse events systematically. Interdisciplinary collaboration between Ayurvedic practitioners, allopathic physicians, and regulatory authorities is essential for optimizing patient safety and therapeutic outcomes.
