Chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions present significant challenges in longitudinal patient care, requiring multifaceted and sustained interventions. Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, offers Rasayana a class of rejuvenative therapies focused on promoting longevity, tissue regeneration, and systemic resilience. Recent interdisciplinary research underscores the value of integrating Rasayana principles within allopathic frameworks, particularly in complex cases where standard protocols may fall short. This review synthesizes current knowledge and clinical experience, providing actionable insights for physicians and healthcare professionals interested in evidence-based integrative care models.
The global burden of chronic diseases is escalating, with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounting for over 70% of deaths worldwide, according to the WHO. In India and many low- and middle-income countries, the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and age-related degenerative diseases continues to rise. These conditions are characterized by prolonged courses, high morbidity, and significant healthcare costs, accentuating the need for innovative and sustainable management strategies. Epidemiological studies suggest that lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, and genetic predispositions contribute to the complex etiology of these disorders, highlighting the relevance of holistic interventions that address multiple physiological systems.
Chronic diseases often involve progressive loss of cellular homeostasis, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and immune dysregulation. Rasayana therapies, as described in classical Ayurvedic texts and corroborated by modern research, target these pathophysiological processes at multiple levels.
