Interpreting an ECG begins with a solid foundation in cardiac physiology. Understanding the normal electrical conduction system of the heart, including the sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node, and the ventricular conduction system, is paramount. This knowledge allows the physician to recognize normal waveforms and intervals on an ECG and differentiate them from pathological ones.
ECG interpretation involves pattern recognition. Physicians must be able to identify the characteristic waveforms associated with common cardiac conditions such as myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and electrolyte imbalances. This skill requires a meticulous approach and practice with numerous ECG tracings.
ECG findings should never be interpreted in isolation but must be correlated with the patient's clinical picture. For instance, ST-segment elevation may indicate a myocardial infarction, but this diagnosis must be supported by the patient's symptoms and other diagnostic tests. This integration of ECG findings with the overall clinical context is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.
