It elucidates the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease burden, explores underlying pathophysiology, reviews risk factors and clinical manifestations, and discusses diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Recent advances and guideline-driven recommendations are highlighted, with a focus on the mechanisms and efficacy of interventions designed to foster community-wide cardiovascular literacy. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, accounting for a substantial proportion of healthcare expenditure and loss of quality-adjusted life years. Functional literacy in cardiovascular health extends beyond general health knowledge, encompassing the ability to access, comprehend, and apply information to make informed decisions regarding cardiovascular risk, prevention, and self-management. Public health initiatives aimed at improving cardiovascular functional literacy are increasingly recognized as pivotal in reducing disease burden and health disparities. Optimal management of cardiovascular diseases necessitates a multifaceted approach encompassing pharmacologic therapy, lifestyle modification, and procedural interventions where indicated. Patient-centered care models, supported by functional literacy, enhance adherence to antihypertensives, statins, antiplatelet agents, and other medications. Community-based interventions such as nurse-led clinics, peer support groups, and digital health platforms have demonstrated efficacy in reinforcing treatment adherence and fostering self-management skills.
Recent years have witnessed substantial innovation in the delivery of cardiovascular health education. Digital interventions, including mobile health applications, telemedicine, and interactive web-based resources, are increasingly leveraged to tailor education to individual literacy levels and preferences. Emerging therapies such as novel lipid-lowering agents, SGLT2 inhibitors for heart failure, and personalized risk stratification tools necessitate ongoing education for both patients and providers to ensure optimal utilization and understanding. Community health worker-led programs and school-based curricula have also shown promise in enhancing cardiovascular literacy from an early age.
