This can be done by assessing the patient’s medical history and risk factors. Once the risk factors have been identified, the next step is to implement strategies to reduce the risk of VTE.
Pharmacological strategies are the most common strategies used to reduce the risk of VTE. These strategies involve the use of anticoagulants, such as warfarin, heparin, and low molecular weight heparins. Non-pharmacological strategies are also important for reducing the risk of VTE. These strategies involve lifestyle modifications, such as increasing physical activity and avoiding prolonged periods of immobility. Compression stockings can also be used to reduce the risk of VTE by increasing circulation in the legs. In addition, smoking cessation can help reduce the risk of VTE.
