Abstract

Environmental skin health inequities represent a critical and underrecognized dimension of public health, particularly affecting underserved and marginalized populations. Disparities in skin disease prevalence and outcomes are closely linked to social determinants, environmental exposures, and systemic barriers in healthcare access. This review synthesizes current evidence on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, and clinical features of environmentally driven skin diseases and evaluates existing and emerging public health strategies designed to mitigate these inequities. Emphasis is placed on guideline-driven management, recent advances, and practical approaches for healthcare professionals to address environmental skin health disparities at both the patient and population level.

Environmental factors are increasingly recognized as major contributors to the global burden of skin diseases, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable populations. Factors such as air pollution, climate change, occupational exposures, and inadequate access to clean water and sanitation significantly influence the incidence and severity of dermatologic conditions. Social determinants of health—including poverty, housing quality, and healthcare access—further exacerbate disparities. Addressing these multifactorial challenges requires a comprehensive, multidisciplinary public health approach that integrates clinical care, community-based interventions, policy reform, and rigorous research.
