Enterobiasis, also known as pinworm infection, is a common parasitic infection caused by the nematode Enterobius vermicularis. This tiny worm measures only 1-2 cm in length and mainly infects children between ages 5-10 years old. The female worm lays her eggs on the perianal region causing intense itching and discomfort.
The transmission of this infection usually occurs via ingestion of contaminated food, water or surfaces that have come into contact with infected feces. It can also be spread through person-to-person contact making it highly contagious within families and institutions such as schools.
Enterobiasis may not always cause symptoms but some infected individuals experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The most distinctive symptom is anal itching especially at night when the female worms lay their eggs.
