Description:

A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this session on the importance of anthropometry in the early detection of short stature.

Growth in babies is governed by several intrinsic and extrinsic factors which include growth hormones, nutrition, the health of the baby, and others. The growth deficit conditions may lead to developmental problems like short stature. Detecting short stature at an early stage has tangible benefits for growth prognosis and the well-being of the child.

Short stature is caused due to growth hormone deficiency in babies. Short stature is a term applied to a child whose height is 2 standard deviations (SD) or more below the mean for children of that sex and chronologic age. It is a type of deficiency in children that hinders the height of the babies.

Anthropometry is the science of systematic measurements of the human body. Thus accurate anthropometric measurements of the child at regular intervals can help in identifying underlying medical, nutritional, or developmental problems in children and detecting issues like short stature.
