Oropharyngeal cancers are common in men as smoking is one of the primary reasons for having this disease. Also, being infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) can increase the risk of oropharyngeal cancer. Signs and symptoms of oropharyngeal cancer include a lump in the neck and a sore throat
HPV status is associated with the occurrence of cancer at the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils. About 70% of oropharyngeal cancers occur in HPV positive individuals.
