Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects both the skin and joints, typically developing in individuals with psoriasis. Characterized by joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, PsA can lead to significant disability if not properly managed. It presents in various forms, including symmetrical arthritis, asymmetrical oligoarthritis, and spondylitis, each with distinct clinical features. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent joint damage and maintain quality of life, as PsA can be progressive and debilitating.
Management of Psoriatic Arthritis involves a combination of treatments aimed at controlling inflammation, reducing pain, and improving joint function. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used for mild cases, while disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologics, such as TNF inhibitors and IL-17 inhibitors, are crucial for more severe cases. Biologics have revolutionized PsA treatment by targeting specific immune pathways involved in the disease process, offering significant improvements in both skin and joint symptoms.
