Speciality: Bariatrics
Description:
Bariatric surgery is a significant step for managing obesity, but it’s not the first treatment doctors recommend. Typically, it’s considered for adults with a body mass index, or BMI, of 40 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 35 or more who also have obesity-related health problems like diabetes or sleep apnea. Before surgery is discussed, patients are encouraged to try lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, and sometimes medication. If these approaches do not lead to significant weight loss or if health risks remain high, bariatric surgery may become an option. Ultimately, the decision is made with a healthcare team, considering each person’s unique health needs and goals.
