Today, let's clarify the differences between MRI, CT scan, and X-ray – three common imaging techniques in medicine. An X-ray uses radiation to quickly capture images of dense structures like bones, making it ideal for diagnosing fractures. A CT scan, or computed tomography, also uses X-rays, but takes multiple cross-sectional images for a more detailed view of organs and tissues. MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, uses strong magnets and radio waves instead of radiation, producing highly detailed images of soft tissues like the brain, muscles, and ligaments. Each technique serves a unique purpose, so doctors choose based on the area of the body and the information needed. Understanding these differences helps you make sense of your medical care.
