The bones of the face play a vital role in protecting the brain, providing attachments for muscles involved in facial expressions, and supporting the soft tissues of the face. The facial skeleton is made up of 14 bones: the frontal bone, two parietal bones, two temporal bones, the ethmoid bone, the sphenoid bone, the occipital bone, the zygomatic bone, maxilla, and mandible. The frontal bone forms the forehead and nasal cavity floor. The parietal bones form the sides and top of the skull. The temporal bones are located at either side of the head and house the structures of hearing and balance. The ethmoid bone is located between the orbits (eye sockets) and forms part of the nasal cavity walls. The sphenoid bone lies behind the ethmoid bone and houses part of the pituitary gland. The occipital bone lies atthe back ofthe skull and articulates withthe cervical vertebrae. Participate Now"
